New Book Presentation at Greece Historical Society

By on March 4, 2019

On February 10, 2019, the Greece Historical Society hosted Marilyn Nolte as she spoke about her new book co-authored with Verdis L. Robinson, “Beyond those Gates: Mountains of Hope in Rochester’s African-American History.” The book covers the lives and accomplishments of individuals known to us today and likewise uncovers lesser known, but equally interesting and deserving citizens of New York’s flour/flower city.

Nolte was in charge of the project and wrote on the lesser known citizens. Robinson, an authority on African American history, edited the book and wrote the preface and introductions to the three time frames.

Jacqueline Sprague also spoke at the event about her family that is included in the book. She shared some of her experiences of finding out about her family history. Sprague and Katherine Sprague-Dexter wrote the piece on Nathan Sprague and Rosetta Douglass. Sprague is the great, great grandniece of Fredrick Douglass.
