FASNY Scholarship Awarded

By on September 26, 2019

adam-lawrence-1-copyThe Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) has awarded the 2019 FASNY Gerard J. Buckenmeyer Volunteer Scholarship to Adam Lawrence of Rochester. Lawrence received a certificate and scholarship of $1,500 for his volunteer service in the community from Diana G. Pfersick, member of the FASNY Board of Directors.

“I initially joined the Barnard Fire Department Explorer Post because I wanted to be more involved in my community. I have now been a member for four years,” says Lawrence.

Lawrence plans to attend Monroe Community College in the fall where he intends to study Fire Protection Technology.

Outside of the firehouse Lawrence enjoys exploring different states for their snowboarding opportunities, and even was on his high school’s ski club.

Lawrence is one of 26 students chosen for this scholarship.

Lawrence adds, “if you are considering joining the fire department-stop thinking about it and just do it! It has changed my life in such a great way. The fire department has offered me a brotherhood I wouldn’t have found elsewhere. There is a great sense of love amongst everyone involved which really makes me feel like I truly belong.”

Scholarships are awarded on the basis of an applicant’s volunteer service to his or her community, such as serving with a local fire department, scouting, church, school, work with senior citizens, fire prevention, and other projects. Additional criteria include consistent demonstration of good character and completion of a written essay.

The Gerard J. Buckenmeyer FASNY Volunteer Scholarship program is made possible each June through the generous donations of individuals, fire departments and auxiliaries. This year, Provident Agency Inc., the provider of the accidental death and dismemberment insurance for FASNY members, has again provided major underwriting support to help FASNY award scholarships to young volunteers. FASNY would also like to recognize the in-kind support donated by McNeil and Co., which provides more than 80 hours of administrative work needed to process the applications and awards

About FASNY:  Founded in 1872, the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) represents the interests of the approximately 105,000 volunteer firefighters and emergency medical personnel in New York State. For more information, visit www.fasny.com<http://www.fasny.com/>.
