Extension of Cold War Veterans Exemption

By on January 11, 2018

The Greece Town Board adopted a local law to extend the tax exemption for Cold War Veterans at the Town Board Meeting on Tuesday, December 19, 2017.

In October 2017, Chapter 290 of the NYS Municipal Law authorized taxing entities and Towns to extend the Cold War Veterans Exemption beyond the initial ten year limit. A “Local Law” was necessary to adopt the exemption extension.

The local law was adopted, thus extending the tax exemption for Cold War Veterans beyond the original ten year limitation as authorized by Section 458-b of New York Real Property Tax Law. Without this local law being enacted, the Cold War Vets exemption would expire after 10 years. Additionally, Chapter 376 now authorizes school districts to adopt the Eligible Funds Veterans Exemption as well. A resolution by the individual school boards would be required.

“We have 153 Cold War Veterans registered in the Town of Greece. These heroes defend our rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and equally as important they defend the freedoms we hold so dear. We are committed to constantly looking for ways to serve those who have so selflessly served us, and this tax exemption extension is one way we can do that. I am pleased to be able to support this measure on behalf of the Cold War Veteran’s in our community,” Supervisor Bill Reilich said.
