Not very often will you find volunteers with 50 years of service. It’s a rarity to find five volunteers with over 50 years of service all in one Fire Department. The North Greece Department is fortunate to have that opportunity to celebrate five of their volunteer firemen for a lifetime of service and dedication to the Greece community.

Eugene Preston joined the North Greece Fire Department in 1961 and is the longest active member in the department with 56 years of active service. Many families may recognize Eugene as the man behind the kid’s poster contest. Eugene has spent many years as the driving force behind the kid’s fire prevention program with the poster contest in the schools. Eugene served on countless committees, activities and fundraisers. He served as the President of the Fire Department, served on the District Board of Fire Commissioners, and as a member of numerous Firematic organizations including Monroe County Fire Chiefs, Monroe County Fire District Officers Association, IAFF, and FASNY. He was the President of the Greece Fire Council. Eugene is the owner of one of the finest fire memorabilia collections in NYS. It can be seen at the Greece Historical Society. Eugene grew up on his family farm on Long Pond Road and built his home there where he and his wife Pat raised their three children.

Kenneth Preston joined North Greece Fire in 1962 and has been serving the department for 55 years. Ken served on numerous committees, activities and fundraisers. He was the President of the Fire Department and served as President to both the Town of Greece Fire Counsel and North Greece Exempts Firemen’s Association. Ken served as President and Treasurer of Monroe County Fire District Officers Association. For 32 years Ken served on the North Greece Fire District Board of Fire Commissioners. In 2013 he was awarded the Monroe County Joint Fire Service Leadership Meritorious Award. Ken continues serving as one of the most active members in the Department and is also a member of the North Greece Fire Police. He is 2nd Vice President of AFDSNY where he has also served as the Region 5 Direction. Ken continues to work actively on state legislation and rules for fire districts and is very involved on state legislation. Ken is a lifelong resident of Greece with his wife Donna where they raised their two children.

Michael continues as a very active member of the department and apparatus drivers.  He is a lifelong resident of Greece where he and his wife Linda raised their three children.

Sherman Manchester, Jr. just reached his 52 year anniversary with North Greece FD. He joined in January of 1966. Sherman has an abundance of knowledge in the Fire Department with many certifications and a degree in Fire Protection. Sherman served as a Line Officer, Deputy Chief and Chief and he served on NGFD Board of Fire Commissioners. Sherman held membership at many associations including the International Association of Fire Chiefs, New York State Association of Fire Chiefs, Monroe County Fire Chiefs, and National Fire Protection Association. As the Incident Command Instructor, Sherman was instrumental in training hundreds of Police, Fire and EMS. He also helped create the first NGFD Standard Operating Procedure books. Sherman is a lifelong resident of Greece where he and his wife Mary Jane raised their eight children.

Thomas Piazza joined the NGFD in December of 1967 and just reached his 50 year anniversary. Tom served on and chaired many committees, activities and fundraisers. He has a vast amount of certifications from local, county, state and national training seminars. Tom served as a Line Officer, Assistant and Deputy Chief and Fire Chief. He served on numerous Firematic organizations such as Monroe County Fire Chiefs, Monroe County Fire District Officers Association, International Association of Fire Chiefs, a life member of NYS Association of Fire Chiefs, and Firemen’s Association of the State of New York. One of Tom’s most memorable service memories is being Chief during the infamous ice storm of 1991. Tom received the Meritorious Service Award from the Rochester Safety Council in 1996 and was presented with the North Greece distinguished service award in 2014. Tom continues actively serving the department and is an apparatus driver.  He is retired as the Battalion Chief from his career at Kodak Park Fire Department. He has lived in Greece for over 55 years with his wife Joanne. Tom reflects on his lifelong service at NGFD and he says, “It led to everything.”  By taking the initiative to volunteer it led to his career and how he met his wife. Volunteering at the NGFD was the first step to the path that really set his life in motion.
