On Friday, December 1st, three Greece Central school elementary string orchestras combined to perform a holiday concert at the Greece Ridge Mall.  Approximately 50 string students participated in this fantastic event.

The students started rehearsing a repertoire of seasonal songs and classic tunes at the beginning of the school year.  To make this a successful concert, the students met for one rehearsal a few days prior to the mall concert.  This rehearsal was a great experience for the students of the three different orchestras.  It was a chance to come together and meet other string musicians within the district, some of whom they know from Girl Scouts, soccer or other extra-curricular hobbies.

In addition to bringing their school music into the community, the orchestra students reflected on the meaning of the season by bringing food to donate to the local food shelf.  After last year’s rehearsal, students were able to donate approximately one hundred and ten pounds of food to Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf! This year’s students were just as generous!

The students in these orchestras have learned so much more than just music.  They make friends with other string players, make connections to the community and celebrate the spirit of the holidays.  Greece elementary school string students understand the power of music!
